わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに千島列島からカムチャッカ半島、サハリン、シベリア東部に分布しています。高山帯の砂礫地に生え、高さは５〜１５センチになります。葉は羽状に細かく分裂します。７月から８月ごろ、ピンク色または紅紫色の花を下向きに咲かせます。花冠は左右相称で４弁あり、外側の２個は上半部が反り返り、基部は膨らみます。和名は、花のかたちが馬の顔に似ていることから。
ケマンソウ科コマクサ属の多年草で、学名は Dicentra peregrina。英名はありません。
The "Koma-kusa" (Dicentra peregrina) belongs to Fumariaceae (the Fumitory family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido, as well as the Kuril Islands, the Kamchatska Peninsula, Sakhalin and eastern Siberia. This herb grows in alpine screes, and can reach 5-15 cm in height. The leaves are finely divided pinantely. The pink or magenta flowers bloom descending from July to August. The corolla is bilaterally-symmetric and four-petaled. The upper-half of outer two petals are recurved, and the base of them are swollen. The Japanese name is derived that the shape of flower resembles the horse's head.
