わが国の本州、静岡県以西から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の林内や林縁に生え、高さは２〜３メートルになります。よく分枝して、枝先に葉を３輪生します。４月から５月ごろ、葉の展開する前に１〜３個の紅紫色の花を咲かせます。よく似た「みつばつつじ（Rhododendron dilatatum）」とは異なり、雄しべが１０個あります。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron reticulatum。英名はありません。

"Koba-no-mitsuba-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron reticulatum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native westward from Shizuoka prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in montane forests, woodland margines and can reach 2-3 m in height. The stem is much branched and puts out leaves 3-whorled. The pale magenta flowers come in April to May before foliation. It is defined by having 10-stamens differently from "Mitsuba-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron dilatatum).
