The Oriental chain fern (Woodwardia orientalis) belongs to the family Blechnaceae. It is an evergreen perennial fern that is distributed from Miyagi prefecture of Honshu south to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China and aorund the Hymalayas. This fern grows on sunny slopes and cliffs of mountains, and it can reach about 2 m in height. The gemmas are produced on the leaf surface. They form new clumps when shed on the ground. The sori are dashed line and arranged on either side of rachis. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "珠芽狗脊蕨" and "東方狗脊" (dong fang gou ji).
