中国南部が原産です。主茎は地上を這い、長さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉の表面は青緑色で光沢があり、白い縁があります。栽培用で「レインボーファーン」とも呼ばれていますが、本州では一部帰化しているところもあります。

イワヒバ科イワヒバ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Selaginella unicinata。英名は Peacock moss、Rainbow spikemoss。

The peacock moss (Selaginella unicinata) belongs to the family Selaginellaceae. It is a perennial pteridophyte that is native to southern China. The main stems crawl on the ground and extend 30-60 cm long. The surface of leaf is bluish-green and glossy with white edges. This fern is also called "Rainbow fern" as an ornamental plant. It is naturalized in the some parts of Honshu.
