わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。水のきれいな池沼や小川に生えます。肥大した根茎が地中を横に長くのび、それが白骨のように見えることから、「せんこつ(川骨)」とも呼ばれます。6月から9月ころ、円柱形の花柄を水の上に出して,黄色い花を上向きに咲かせます。花のように見えるのは萼片で、内部に多数の花弁と雄ずいがあります。 
スイレン科コウホネ属の多年草で、学名は Nuphar japonicum。英名はありません。 
"Koo-hone" (Nuphar japonicum) belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Waterlily family). It is a perennial herb that is native all over Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in ponds, bogs or streams. The swollen rhizomes spread under grounds. The columnar peduncles are borne on the water and bloom yellow flowers upward. The sepals look like petals, the true petals and stamens are inside them.
