The "Koshi-abura" (Eleutherococcus sciadophylloides) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and distributed to so many places. This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 10 m in height. The barks are smooth and the trunks are not so much branched. The leaves are palmately pentafoliolate with long petioles. The umbels are borne at the terminal, long peducles. The pale yellowish green flowers bloom from August to September. The young shoots are used as a wild vegetable same as the Hercules club (Aralia elata). The Japanese name comes from the fact that this resin solution was strained and used for paint.
