The "Koshino-charumeru-so" (Mitella koshiensis) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Niigata Prefecture and eastern Toyama Prefecture in Honshu, Japan. It grows along coastal streams and in shaded, damp areas within forests, reaching a height of 20 to 50 cm. Its underground rhizomes are somewhat long and spread horizontally. The leaf blades are broadly ovate, with a heart-shaped base; the margins are shallowly 5-lobed and further irregularly serrated. Both surfaces of the leaves are covered with long white hairs. From April to May, it extends a flower stalk, producing a raceme at the tip and blooming with small reddish-purple flowers. There are five petals, which are pinnately divided into 5 to 9 narrow lobes, giving them a "fishbone-like" appearance. The fruit is a capsule.
