熱帯アメリカが原産ですが、熱帯から暖帯地域に広く帰化しています。「こせんだんぐさ（栴檀草）」の変種で、わが国へは江戸時代の末期に渡来しました。荒れ地や河原などに生え、高さは５０〜１２０センチになります。葉は３全裂または２〜３回羽状分裂します。９月から１１月ごろ、上部の枝先に頭花を咲かせます。長さ５〜７ミリの白色の舌状花をつけるのが特徴です。

キク科センダングサ属の一年草で、学名は Bidens pilosa var. minor。英名は Hairy beggar-ticks。

The hairy beggar-ticks (Bidens pilosa var. minor) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to the tropical America. Now it is naturalized widely in the tropical and sub-tropical areas. It was introduced into Japan in the last days of Edo Period (about 170 years ago). This herb grows in barrens or stream banks, and can reach 50-120 cm in height. The leaves are tri-dissected or bipinnately to tripinnately. The flower-heads bloom at the upper branches from September to November. It is difined by white ray-flowers, 5-7 mm in length.
