わが国の北海道西南部から、本州、四国・九州それに朝鮮半島南部に分布しています。人里周辺の日当たりの良い場所に生え、高さは５〜１０センチほどになります。葉は長三角形から長卵形です。３月から５月ごろ、淡い紫色から淡い紅紫色をしたやや大柄な花を咲かせます。花柱の先が少しふくらみ、距がやや太くて長めという特徴があります。

スミレ科スミレ属の多年草で、学名は Viola japonica。英名はありません。

Ko-sumire (Viola japonica) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from southwestern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in sunny places around human settlements and can reach 5 to 10 cm in height. The leaves are long triangular to long ovate. The slightly large flowers of pale purple to pale magenta bloom from March to May. The tip of the style is slightly bulging, and the spur is slightly thicker and longer.
