わが国の八重山諸島から台湾の蘭嶼島（紅頭嶼）、フィリピンに分布しています。小さな群落を形成して、根茎を這わせて広がります。葉は丸い腎形で縁には細かい鋸歯があります。３月から１０月ごろ、花茎の先に白色から淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。和名は、蘭嶼島の旧名である紅頭嶼（こうとうしょ）に因みます。

シュウカイドウ科シュウカイドウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Begonia fenicis。英名はありません。

"Koto-shukaido" (Begonia fenicis) belongs to Begoniaceae (the Begonia family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from The Yaeyama Islands in Japan to Orchid Island (Redhead Island) in Taiwan and the Philippines. This herb forms a small community and crawls and spreads by the rhizomes. The leaves are round kidney-shaped with fine serrations on the edges. The white to pale pink flowers come on the tips of the flower stalks from March to October. The Japanese name is named after the old name of Orchid Island, "Kotosho".
