The "Koto-shiran"' (Spathoglottis plicata) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from the Okinawa Islands in Japan south to Taiwan, Southeast Asia and India. This orchid is terrestrial, grows in sunny fields and can reach 30-50 cm in height. The corm is ovate and comes into 3-5 linear-lanceolate leaves. It extends a flower stalk and comes into peach bloom to white blossoms through the year. Its Japanese name derives from the former name of Lanyu Island, "Koto-sho", located off the southeast coast of Taiwan. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "紫苞舌蘭".
