マツ科ツガ属の常緑高木で、学名は Tsuga diversifolia。英名は Northern Japanese hemlock。
The Northern Japanese hemlock (Tsuga diversifolia) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is endemic to Japan and distributed from Chubu distict north to Tohoku district of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in sub-alpine zone and it can reach about 20 m in height. The leaves are flat linear and alternate. It blooms flowers in June through July, and it bears small strobiles in fall. The Japanese name "Tsuga" comes from its small leaves. It is also known as "Hime-tsuga".
