わが国の固有種で、本州の宮城・新潟県以西から四国に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は卵形から長楕円形で対生し、両面に毛が生えています。４月から５月ごろ、葉腋から淡い黄白色の花を２個下垂して咲かせます。花冠は漏斗状で、先端は５裂します。果実は２個が合着し、７月ごろ赤く熟します。別名で「ちちぶひょうたんぼく（秩父瓢箪木）」とも呼ばれます。

スイカズラ科スイカズラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lonicera ramosissima。英名はありません。

"Ko-uguisu-kagura" (Lonicera ramosissima) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and is distributed from Miyagi and Niigata prefectures west of Honshu to Shikoku. It grows in mountainous areas and grows 1 to 2 m high. The leaves are ovate to oblong, opposite, and hairy on both sides. 2 pale yellowish-white flowers hang down from the leaf axils and bloom from April to May. The corolla is funnel-shaped with five lobes at the tip. The two fruits are connate and ripen to red around July. It is also called "Chichibu-hyotan-boku".
