ヨーロッパから西アジアが原産です。わが国へは、明治時代の中頃に渡来しました。現在では、アメリカやアジア、オーストラリアの各地に帰化しています。海岸に近い砂地に生え、匍匐して長さは３０センチほどになります。全体に軟毛に被われています。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は倒心臓形から広楕円形です。線形の托葉があるのが特徴です。春から夏にかけて、葉腋から花序をだし、黄色い蝶形花を咲かせます。

マメ科ウマゴヤシ属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Medicago minima。英名は Bur medic、Little burclover。

The bur medic (Medicago minima) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual or biennial herb that is native to Europe and West Asia. This herb was introduced into Japan in the middle days of Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). Now a days, It is naturalizaed widely in America, Asia and Australia. It grows on coastal sandy soils and creeping about 30 cm long. The plant is covered with pubescences. The leaves are 3-lobed compound and the leaflets are obcordate to broad elliptic. It is defined by linear stipulars. The clusters are borne in axiles and bloom yellow papilionaceous flowers from spring to summer.
