中国が原産です。桿は直径８センチ、高さは１４メートルにもなる大型のタケです。節は一重で、その下には白い粉状の輪があります。また、桿にブタの肌のような小さなディンプル（窪み）があるのが特徴です。中国語では「毛環竹（mao huan zhu）」と呼ばれます。

イネ科マダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys viridis (syn. Phyllostachys meyeri)。英名は Pigskin bamboo。

The Pigskin bamboo belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is native to China. It is a large bamboo, with a culm 8 cm in diameter and a height of up to 14 m. It has a single node with a white powdery ring underneath. It is also characterized by small dimples on the culm that resemble the skin of a pig. In Chinese, it is called "毛環竹" (mao huan zhu).
