中国の長江以南から台湾が原産です。温帯地域の標高２０００メートルあたりに自生しています。わが国へは、江戸時代の終わりに渡来しました。成長が早く、高さ３０メートルほどになります。直立する幹から枝が輪生し、その側枝に葉が２列で羽状に並びます。ふつう「こうようざん（広葉杉）」は和名で、中国では単に「杉木」と言うとのことですが、台湾では「廣葉杉」、「福州杉」とも呼ばれています。

スギ科コウヨウザン属の常緑高木で、学名は Cunninghamia lanceolata。英名は Chinese fir。

The Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) belongs to Taxodiaceae (the Bald cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southward from the Chang Jiang river in China to Taiwan. This tree was introduced into Japan in the late days of Edo Era (about 250 years ago). This tree grows fast and can reach about 30 m in height. The trunk is erect and borne branches in whorls. The leaves are flat needles and arranged in double rows along the stout twigs.
