アメリカの南東部が原産です。土壌を選ばす湿地にも生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルになります。わが国へは明治時代に渡来し、盆栽や庭木として植栽されてきました。葉は楕円形で細かい鋸歯があり、互生します。５月から６月ごろ、穂状花序をだして「りょうぶ」に似た少し香りのある白い花を咲かせます。

ユキノシタ科ズイナ属の落葉低木で、学名は Itea virginica。英名は Virginia sweetspire。

The Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to the southeastern United States. This tree grows in various soils, even if in bogs and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. This tree was introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago), and has been cultivated as bonsai trees or garden trees. The leaves are elliptic and alternate with fine toothed edges. The spikes are borne and the fragrant white flowers bloom from May to June.
