わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。山地の水湿地に生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。茎葉は広線形です。７月から８月ごろ、茎の先に大きな散房花序をだし、小穂は１〜３個が集まります。鱗片が灰黒色をしているのが特徴です。

カヤツリグサ科ホタルイ属の多年草で、学名は Scirpus sylvaticus var. maximowiczii。英名はありません。

The "Kuro-abura-gaya" (Scirpus sylvaticus var. maximowiczii) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan. This herb grows in mountainous wetlands and uo to a height of about 1 m. The leaves are broad linear. The large inflorescences are borne on the tips of the stems from July to August, and they are a collection of 1 to 3 spikelets. The feature is that the scales are grayish black.
