中国の東北部が原産で、わが国へは2千年ほど前に渡来した「あずき(小豆)」の一品種です。蔓性が強く、種子が黒いのが特徴です。ふつうの「あずき」は北海道から東北地方が主な産地ですが、「くろあずき」は北海道から沖縄にかけて、わずかに栽培されています。 
マメ科ササゲ属の一年草で、学名は Vigna angularis。英名は Black azuki bean。

It is an annual herb that is a variety of "Azuki bean" that originated in the northeastern part of China and came to Japan about 2,000 years ago. It is characterized by strong vines and black seeds.
