The "Kusa-botan" (Clematis stans) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a deciduous shrub that is endemic to Japan and distributed only to Honshu. This shrub grows on mountain forest edges or grasslands, and can reach about 1 m in height. The leaves are trifoliate and arranged oppositely. The cymes are borne at the tips of stems or axils, and the pale purple flowers bloom from August to September. The underneath part of corolla is tubular and the tips are recurving. The Japanese name "Kusa-botan" is derives from the leaf-shape resembling the tree peony.
