The "Kuma-charumeru-so" (Mitella sp.) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). Its primary distribution is in the Kuma region of Kyushu, Japan. It grows on damp rocks along streams. Previously, it was considered a Kyushu variety of "Tosano-charumeru-so" (Mitella yoshinagae), but following molecular phylogenetic analysis by Yudai Okuyama of the National Museum of Nature and Science, it is now treated as a separate species. Only hermaphroditic plants exist in this species. Morphologically, it closely resembles "Tosano-charumeru-so", but it is smaller in size and can be distinguished by the fact that the tips of the stipules at the leaf bases are bifid.
