わが国の本州、愛知県、九州の熊本県、それに朝鮮半島南部に分布しています。「やまはぎ（山萩）」の変種です。山地の岩崖地に生え、高さは２メートルほどになります。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は楕円形です。７月から９月ごろ、葉腋の総状花序に暗赤紫色の花を咲かせます。竜骨弁の先が暗紫色になります。

マメ科ハギ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Lespedeza bicolor var. higoensis (syn. Lespedeza melanantha)。英名はありません。

"Kurobana-kihagi" (Lespedeza bicolor var. higoensis) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a semi-decoduous shrub that is distributed to Aichi prefecture of Honshu, Kumamoto prefecture of Kyushu in Japan, and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is a variety of "Lespedeza". This shrub grows on rocky cliffs in the mountains and up to a height of about 2 m. The leaves are trifoliate and the leaflets are ovate. The dark red-purple flowers bloom on the racemes of the axils from July to September. The tip of the keel turns dark purple.
