わが国の各地をはじめ、東アジアや北アメリカに分布しています。山地に生え、「くじゃく（孔雀）」の羽のように掌状に分枝して、それぞれに単羽状に羽片を８〜１３対つけます。春さきの芽吹きのときには、紅色を帯びます。ソーラス（胞子嚢群）は、羽片の前縁につきます。

ホウライシダ科ホウライシダ属の夏緑性シダ類で、学名は Adiantum pedatum。英名は Northern maidenhair fern。

The northern maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum) belongs to the family Parkeriaceae. It is a non-evergreen fern that is native to Japan, East Asia, and North America. This fern grows in the mountains. The leaves are branched like a peacock's tail feathers and consist of 8-13 pairs of pinnae. They are tinged rose-pink in newly emergent spring plants. The sori are near the anterior margins of the pinnae. (edit by Greg Brockelbank)
