わが国の本州、関東地方・福井県以西から四国・九州それに台湾や朝鮮半島、中国に分布しています。山野に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。樹皮は灰褐色で平滑、皮目があります。葉は楕円形で先端が尖り互生します。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋に淡い紫色の小さな花を咲かせます。果実は丸い核果で、秋から冬にかけて真っ赤に熟します。樹皮からは鳥黐（とりもち）をとるそうです。名前は「もちのき」に似ていて、若枝や葉柄が黒紫色を帯びることから。台湾華語では「鐵冬青」、中国語では「鐵冬青（tie dong qing）」と呼ばれます。 |

モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Ilex rotunda。英名は Dwarf Chinese holly。 |

The Dwarf Chinese holly (Ilex rotunda) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Kanto district of Honshu west to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in field and mountains and can reach about 10 m in height. Bark is smooth, grayish-brown and has lenticels. Leaves are elliptic, alternate and have acute tips. Small pale purple flowers on the axils come in May to June. Fruits are drupes and ripen bright red in fall to winter. Birdlime is made from the barks. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "鐵冬青", and "鐵冬青" (tie dong qing) in Chinese. |
