ヨーロッパからロシアに分布しています。草地や道ばた、河原の土手などに生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。茎は赤褐色で、まばらに毛が生えます。葉は卵形で基部は心形、上面にはまばらに毛があり、下面にはフェルト状の毛が生えます。７月から９月ごろ、長い花茎をだし、穂状花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。雄しべは５個、花糸には紫色の毛があります。写真は、白花の園芸品種「アルブム（cv. Album）」。

ゴマノハグサ科モウズイカ属の多年草で、学名は Verbascum nigrum。英名は Black mullein、Dark mullein。

The Black mullein (Verbascum nigrum) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to Russia. It grows in meadows, along roadsides and river banks, and is 50-100 cm tall. The stems are reddish brown and sparsely hairy. The leaves are ovate with a heart-shaped base and sparsely hairy on the upper surface and felt-like hairs on the lower surface. There are five stamens, and the filaments have purple hairs. The photos show the white-flowered garden variety 'Album'.
