The "Kunigami-sansho-zuru" (Elatostema suzukii) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Okinawa Island in Japan. It grows along rivers and in humid areas of the northern forest region (Yambaru), reaching a height of 5 to 12 cm. The stem is round and ascending, with the base creeping and producing roots. The leaves are wedge-shaped and oblong, with blunt serrations along the margins. From around March to May, it produces inconspicuous white flowers in the leaf axils. The plant is dioecious; male flowers appear in capitate inflorescences, while female flowers appear in corymbose inflorescences. It is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
