"Kurin-yuki-fude" (Bistorta suffulta) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. It grows in forests in mountainous areas and is 15 to 35 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-cordate, with long petioles on the basal leaves, short petioles on the cauline leaves, and peduncles on the upper leaves that enfold the stem. There are no petals, and the sepals are five lobed with eight stamens protruding. In Chinese, it is called "支柱拳参" (zhi zhu quan shen).
