わが国の本州、関東地方南部以西から四国、九州それに沖縄や済州島に分布しています。丘陵から低山の林に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。葉は長楕円形で縁には浅い鋸歯があり互生します。４月から５月ごろ、葉腋に長さ７〜８センチの総状花序をだし、小さな白い花をいっぱい咲かせます。満開のころの姿は、まるで真っ白な綿帽子をかぶったようです。

ハイノキ科ハイノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Symplocos prunifolia。英名はありません。

"Kuro-bai" (Symplocos prunifolia) belongs to the family Symplocaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from southern part of the Kanto region west to Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa in Japan and Jeju Island (southern Korea). This tree grows from hills to low mountain forests and up to a height of about 10 m. The leaves are oblong with shallow serrations on the edges and alternate. The racemes with a length of 7-8 cm are borne on the axiles and bloom a lot of small white flowers from April to May. When it was in full bloom, it looked like it was wearing a pure white cotton hat.
