The "Kurobana-odamaki" (Aquilegia viridiflora var. atropurpurea) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from northern China to Mongolia and southeastern Siberia. It grows in forests, valleys, and rocky areas along rivers, reaching a height of 15 to 50 cm. The stem is tinged reddish brown, covered with woolly hairs or glandular hairs, and often branches at the top. The leaves are 2 times triternate compound. From May to July, 3 to 7 flowers bloom in a corymb at the top of the stem. The flowers are dark purple with a spur that is straight or slightly curved inward at the tip. In Chinese, it is called "紫花耬斗菜" (zi hua lou dou cai).
