わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国、ヒマラヤ東部に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。枝や茎には白い軟毛とやや下向きの棘が生えます。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、広卵形の小葉の縁には欠刻状の重鋸歯があります。６月から７月ごろ、枝先や葉腋から総状花序をだし、淡紅色の花を咲かせます。果実は集合果で、紅色から紫黒色に熟し、食べられます。

バラ科キイチゴ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rubus mesogaeus。英名はありません。

"Kuro-ichigo" (Rubus mesogaeus) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China and the eastern Himalaya. This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 1 m in height. The stems and branches are covered with white pubescences and downward spines. The leaves are odd-pinnately compound. The leaflets are broad ovate with indented duplicato-serratus edges. The racemes are borne on the terminal branches and axiles and bloom pale rose-pink flowers from June to July. The fruits are aggregate, ripen in rose-pink to purplish-black and they are edible.
