クスノキ科クロモジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lindera umbellata (syn. Lindera umbellata var. umbellata)。英名はありません。
The "Kuro-moji" (Lindera umbellata) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native from southern Iwate district to the Pacific Ocean side of Honshu, Shikoku, northen Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in montane coppices and can reach 2-3 m in height. The trunk is upright and much branched. If a young branch is broken, it breathes brisk scent and it is used for a expensive toothpick. It is dioecious and bloom pale yellowish-green flowers with new leaves from March to May. The male flower has nine stamens and the female flower has an ovary which surrounded by yellow secretory portions, and has smaller staminodiums.
