	ヨーロッパ南部の地中海沿岸から北アフリカに分布しています。日当たりの良い砂礫地に生え、高さは２０～６０センチになります。ヨーロッパでは１６世紀末から栽培され、わが国へは江戸時代に渡来しています。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉は糸状に細裂します。５月から７月ごろ、枝先に青色や白色、紫色などの花を咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは萼片です。種子は真っ黒で光沢があり、揮発性のニゲラ油が含まれるため芳香があります。
	キンポウゲ科クロタネソウ属の一年草で、学名は Nigella damascena。英名は Love-in-a-mist、Fennel flower。
	The Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is an annual herb that is native to southern Europe, the coastal areas of Mediterranean Sea and North Africa. This herb grows in sunny gravel grasslands and can reach 20-60 cm in height. It had been cultivated in Europe from the last days of 16th century, and was introduced into Japan in Edo Era (about 250 years ago). The leaves are pinnate compound with filiform leaflets. The blue, white or purple flowers come on the terminal branches from May to July. The sepals look like tepals. The seed are glossy black, and contain fragrant essential oil (nigella oil).
