わが国の固有種です。本州の関東地方以西から四国・九州に分布しています。枝は斜めに数多く出て、短い枝は棘に変化します。葉は倒卵形または円形で互生します。３月から５月ごろ、葉の展開前に朱赤色の５弁花を咲かせます。果実は８月から９月に黄熟しますが、食用にされたり、漢方では利尿剤として用いられます。

バラ科ボケ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Chaenomeles japonica。英名は Dwarf quince。

The dwarf quince (Chaenomeles japonica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a deciduous shrub that is endemic to Japan and distributed from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This shrub extends many branches obliquely upward and the short branches transform spines. The leaves are obovate to round and alternate. The vermilion red flowers appear before foliation from March to May. The fruits are ripen in yellow in August through September. They are used as a food or herbal medicine for diuresis.
