西アジアから北アフリカが原産です。現在では、アジアやオーストラリア、アメリカに広く帰化しています。わが国では、１９４３年に横浜市で帰化が確認されています。道ばたや河岸などに生え、よく分枝して高さは５０センチほどになります。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は楕円形です。小葉の上部には低い鋸歯があります。５月から８月ごろ、葉腋から穂状花序をだし、鮮やかな黄色い蝶形花を咲かせます。別名で「ホップつめくさ（ホップ詰草）」とも呼ばれます。

The large hop clover (Trifolium campestre) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual herb that is native to western Asia and nothern Africa. Nowadays it is naturalized widely in Asia, Australia and the United States. It was confirmed to naturalize in Yokohama city in 1943. This herb occurs in roadsides or river banks, it is much-branched and can reach about 50 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliolate with elliptic leaflets. The upper-parts of leaflets are low serrated. The spikes are borne on the axiles and bloom bright yellow papilionaceous flowers from May to August.
