中央アメリカから南アメリカそれに南太平洋諸島に分布しています。蔓は年月を経るとコルクのようになり、高さは３メートルほどになります。葉は楕円形でふつう３裂しますが、かたちの変異はきわめて大きなものです。７月から１１月ごろ、直径３センチほどで、淡緑色または黄緑色の花を咲かせます。果実は濃紫色で、甘みがあるといわれます。

トケイソウ科トケイソウ属の常緑低木で、学名は Passiflora suberosa。英名は Cork-barked passion flower。

The Cork-barked passion flower (Passiflora suberosa) belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Central America to South America and the South Pacific Islands. The vine grows to a height of about 3 m, with cork-like tendrils over time. It produces light green or yellow-green flowers, about 3 cm in diameter, from July to November. The fruits are dark purple and are said to have a sweet taste.
