わが国の固有種で、本州の福島県以西から中部地方の日本海側に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の草地に生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。茎葉は卵形で互生し、基部は茎に流れて狭い翼となります。７月から９月ごろ、上部の葉腋に淡紅色の頭花を咲かせます。ほとんど花柄がなく、総苞は暗紫色の球形で、茶褐色の毛が密生します。

キク科トウヒレン属の多年草で、学名は Saussurea nikoensis var. sessiliflora。英名はありません。

"Kuro-touhiren" (Saussurea nikoensis var. sessiliflora) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an endemic species of Japan and distributed westward from Fukushima prefecture of Honshu to the Japan Sea Side of Chubu district. This herb grows in sub-alpine to alpine grasslands and can reach 30-50 cm in height. The cauline leaves are ovate and alternate. The base of the leaf flows into the stem and becomes a narrow wing. The pale rose pink flower-heads bloom on the upper axils from July to September. They have few peduncles and the bracts are dark purple, globose and covered with dense dark brown hairs.
