朝鮮半島から中国東北部の遼寧省、内モンゴル自治区それにロシアの一部に分布しています。わが国へは、江戸時代のはじめに渡来しました。山地の広葉樹林内に生え、高さは１〜４．５メートルになります。若枝には腺毛が密生します。葉は倒卵形から広倒卵形で、枝先に５個ほど集まって輪生状につきます。５月ごろ、枝先に淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。花冠は漏斗形で５中裂し、雄しべは１０個あります。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron chlippenbachii。英名は Royal azalea。

The Royal azalea (Rhododendron chlippenbachii) belongs to the Ericacea (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from the Korean Peninsula to Liaoning Province in northeastern China, Nei Mongol Autonomous Region and part of Russia. It came to Japan at the beginning of the Edo period (about 350 years ago). This tree grows in broad leaf forests of mountainous areas and its height is 1-4.5 m. The glandular hairs are dense on the young branchs. The leaves are obovate to broad obovate, and arranged in 5 whorls on the terminal stems. The pale pink flowers will bloom at the branch point around May. The corolla is a funnel shape and 5 split apart, and there are 10 stamens.
