The "Kuwaiba-kan-aoi" (Asarum kumageanum) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is an endemic species of Yakushima in Kyushu, Japan. It grows in the forests of low-altitude mountains and is about 10 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-triangular, thick and shiny, and cordate at the base. The sides of the base are also cuneate, giving the leaves a spearhead shape. From November to March, it produces dark purple flowers near the roots. The calyx tube is cylindrical, with hairs scattered on the outside. The sepal lobes are ovate-triangular, with wavy edges. It is classified as a vulnerable species (VU) in the Red List.
