「しもつけそう（下野草）」と「こしじしもつけそう（越路下野草）」との交雑種だと考えられています。古くから栽培され、茶花にも利用されていました。茎はよく分枝して、高さは５０〜１５０センチになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で互生し、小葉は長卵形で大きな頂小葉がつきます。６月から７月ごろ、枝先に集散花序をつけ、小さなピンク色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。白花のものは「なつゆきそう（夏雪草）」と呼ばれます。名前の由来は、京都で染めた鹿の子絞り（かのこしぼり）から。

バラ科シモツケソウ属の多年草で、学名は Filipendula x purpurea。英名はありません。

"Kyo-ganoko" (Filipendula x purpurea) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is thought to be a natural hybrid between "Shimotsuke-so (Filipendula multijuga)" and "Koshiji-shimotsuke-so (Filipendula auriculata)". It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant from long ago, it was used as a flower for a tea ceremony. The stems are much branched, and it can reach 50-150 cm in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound with long ovate leaflets and a largest terminal segments. The small pink flowers bloom abundantly in the terminal cymes from June to July. The white-flowered form is called "Natsuyuki-so". The common name is derived from "Kanoko-shibori". "Kanoko-shibori" is one of the methods of dyeing cloth regularly patterned with spots like the back of the fawn.
