ブラジル南東部のサンパウロ州からパラナ州に分布しています。アトランティックフォレスト（沿岸熱帯雨林）の樹上や地上に生え、高さは３０センチほどになります。葉は剣状でロゼットを形成し、縁には細かい鋸歯と、先端には鋭い棘があります。花茎を伸ばして、先端に赤い花苞に包まれた花序に、紫色または白色の花を咲かせます。海岸に生えるタンクブロメリアの代表種です。

パイナップル科ケスネリア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Quesnelia testudo。英名は Turtlehead、Winter torch bromeliad。

The Turtlehead (Quesnelia testudo) belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to the southeastern region of Brazil, ranging from São Paulo State to Paraná State. It grows on trees and on the ground in the Atlantic Forest (coastal rainforest) and reaches a height of about 30 cm. The leaves are sword-shaped and form a rosette; they have fine serrations along the edges and sharp spines at the tips. It extends a flower stalk, and at the tip, it produces an inflorescence enclosed in a red bract, bearing purple or white flowers. It is a representative species of the tank bromeliads found along the coast.
