南アメリカが原産です。熱帯地域の湿地に生え、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉は濃緑色で９０センチくらいになり、葉柄は白粉を帯びます。葉の基部と葉柄が紫色を帯びるのが特徴です。白っぽい仏炎苞に包まれた肉穂花序をつけます。

サトイモ科キサントソマ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Xanthosoma violaceum。英名は Blue taro、Black malanga。

The Blue taro (Xanthosoma violaceum) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to South America. It grows in swampy areas in tropical regions and grows to about 1.5 m tall. The leaves are dark green and about 90 cm long, and the petiole is tinged with white powder. The base and petiole of the leaf are characterized by a purple tinge. It bears a spadix surrounded by whitish spathe.
