フィリピンやボルネオが原産です。木のようですが、ほんとうは多年草で、茎のように見えるのは葉鞘が巻き重なった「偽茎」です。この葉柄の繊維からマニラ麻がとれます。花序は夏から秋にかけて形成され、苞は赤紫に色づきます。苞の基部近くに雌花を、先端の苞の間に雄花を咲かせます。

バショウ科バショウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Musa textilis。英名は Manila hemp、Abaca。

The Manila hemp (Musa textilis) belongs to the Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is naive to the Philippines and Borneo. It looks like a tree, but it is actually a perennial, and what looks like a stem is a "pseudostem" with leaf sheaths wrapped around it. Manila hemp can be taken from the fiber of this petiole. The inflorescence is formed from summer to fall, and the buds are colored purple. A female flower is placed near the base of the bud and a male flower is placed between the buds at the tip.
