The Malay apple (Syzygium malaccense) belongs to Myrtaceae (the Myrtle family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Malaysia. It grows 5 to 12 m tall. The leaves are elliptic, opposite, soft and leathery. The flowers are conspicuous for their deep red petals and long stamens. The fruit is slightly larger than a chicken egg, and when ripe has a yellow-green background with pink vertical stripes. It is eaten raw, boiled, or processed into jam. The bark and roots are also used for medicinal purposes.
