"Maruba-gumi" (Elaeagnus macrophylla) belongs to Elaeagnaceae (the Oleaster family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa in Japan as well as Taiwan, the southern Korean Peninsula and southern China. This tree grows in coastal outskirts of woods and can reach 2-4 m in height. The leaves are broad ovate with acute tips and wavy edges. They are dark green, glossy with the silver-white scarly hairs on the reverse sides. Drooping white flowers come in axiles from October to November. The false fruits ripen red in March to April and have an astringent taste. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is "äÉ—¥•oŒÓèöŽq".
