北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは明治時代の中頃に渡来し、今では各地に帰化しています。道端などにふつうに生え、高さは２０〜５０センチになります。根生葉は花期には枯れ、茎葉は倒披針形から線状楕円形です。５月から６月ごろ、緑白色の小さな花を咲かせます。果実は短角果で、軍配のようなかたちをしています。

The Wild pepper-grass (Lepidium virginicum) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is a biennial herb that is native to North America. It was introduced into Japan in the middle of Meiji Era (1868-1912) and nowadays naturalized in various places. This herb grows in roadsides and all that, and can reach 20-50 cm in height. The basal leaves blight in flower season and the cauline leaves are oblanceolate to linear-elliptic. The small greenish white flowers appear from May to June. The fruits are silicles and look like referee's fan.
