アメリカ中南部およびメキシコ北部に分布しています。大草原や平原、牧草地などに生え、高さは２０〜７０センチになります。茎は直立し、上部で分枝します。根生葉は線形から卵形で分裂し、中間と上部の茎葉は線形で全縁です。７月から１０月ごろ、枝先に直径１センチほどの黄色い頭花を咲かせます。果実は、長さ１ミリほどの小さな痩果です。写真は、よく栽培されている園芸品種の「ダコタゴールド（cv. Dakota Gold）」。

キク科ヘレニウム属の一年草で、学名は Helenium amarum (syn. Helenium tenuifolium)。英名は Yellow sneezeweed、Yellowdicks。

The Yellow sneezeweed (Helenium amarum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is distributed in the south-central United States and northern Mexico. It grows in prairies, plains, and pastures, and is 20 to 70 cm tall. The stem is erect and branched at the top. The basal leaves are linear to ovate and divided, and the middle and upper cauline leaves are linear and entire. 1-cm diameter yellow flower heads bloom at the ends of branches from July to October. The fruit is a small achene about 1 mm long. The photos show the commonly grown garden variety 'Dakota Gold'.
