Mahonia leveilleana belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in central and southern China, from Guangdong to Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan and Zhejiang. This tree grows up to 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are odd-pinnately compound, looking like "holly". The several racemes are borne on the top of stems and bloom yellow flowers from March to April. The fruits are berries and ripen blue with powdery white in June and July.
