中国原産の「ひいらぎなんてん」と、中国西部から台湾、ビルマに分布する「マホニア・ロマイリフォリア（Mahonia lomariifolia）」との種間交雑種です。本種はロマリイフォリア種の形質を受け継ぎ、長い花序を直立して出すのが特徴です。１２月から２月ごろ、鮮やかな黄色い花を咲かせます。「チャリティー（cv. Charity）」や「ウィンターサン（cv. Winter Sun）」などの園芸品種があります。

メギ科ヒイラギナンテン属の常緑低木で、学名は Mahonia x media。英名はありません。

Mahonia x media belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is a interspecies hybrid between Jananese mahonia (Mahonia japonica) which native to China and Mahonia lomariifolia which native to west China, Taiwan and Burma. This species remains the characters of Mahonia lomariifolia, and has long errect inflorescences. During December to February, bright yellow flowers are seen. There are many cultivars such as 'Charity' and 'Winter Sun'.
