The "Makino-shida" (Asplenium formosae) belongs to Aspleniaceae (the Spleenworts family). It is an evergreen perennial fern that is found on Ishigaki Island in Japan's Yaeyama Islands, as well as in Taiwan, Hainan Island in China, and Vietnam. It grows on tree trunks and rocks in mountainous areas and reaches a height of 60 to 70 cm. The rhizome is short and creeps obliquely, and the leaves grow in tufts. The leaves are odd-pinnate, with 2 to 5 pairs of lateral pinnae. The sori are linear and extend from the midrib toward the margin. It is classified as Endangered (EN) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "南海鐵角蕨", and in Chinese, it is also known as "南海鐵角蕨" (nan hai tie jiao jue).
