アメリカの東南部から中南部、メキシコに分布しています。「ひめふよう（姫芙蓉）」の変種で、河岸の林縁などに生え、高さは６０〜１２０センチになります。葉は卵円形で、掌状に３〜５浅裂します。６月から１０月ごろ、鮮赤色の半開の花を上向きに咲かせます。花冠には、花弁より長く突き出した雄蘂柱があります。

アオイ科ヒメフヨウ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii。英名は Wax mallow、Turk's cap。

The Wax mallow (Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distrbuted to the east-southern and mid-southern Unite States, and Mexico. It is a variety of "Turk's cap". This shrub grows in wooldland edges along streams, and up to a height of 60-120 cm. The leaves are ovate-round and divided into 3-7 shallow lobes palmately. The bright red half-open flowers bloom upright from June to October. The corolla has stamens protruding longer than the petals.
